THE FOUR SUSPECTS: A MURDER MYSTERY

Chapter 9 of the Tuesday Club Murders by Agatha Christie.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE VIDEO

In Episode 20 of Vancouver Public Library’s Story Stream Tanya Bennett is reading from a book from her personal library of vintage mystery books, The Tuesday Club Murders by Agatha Christie. This is a 1933 US edition of a book that was originally published in the UK in 1929 with the title The Thirteen Problems.

Tanya chose this book because it’s the very first book that features  one of her very favourite detective characters: Miss Marple. In fact, Chapter One begins in the sitting room of Miss Marple’s house where her nephew and 4 of his friends decide to start a club. They are going to meet every Tuesday night to discuss unsolved mysteries. At first they forget the elderly aunt Miss Marple is even in the room! The members take turns, bringing a new mystery to the club every week and the meetings make up the 13 chapters in the book (a very tidy way to connect a collection of short mysteries, right?). The book starts with 6 members but some leave and new ones join as the meetings continue. And, as you can imagine, Miss Marple becomes a most valued member. And then goes on to be the main character in twelve Agatha Christie books. and of course many movies and tv shows.

Tanya Bennett reads Chapter 9 of the Tuesday Club Murders, it is called The Four Suspects. This particular meeting of the Tuesday Club takes place at the home of Colonel Bantry and his wife, who are old friends of retired Commissioner of Scotland Yard Sir Henry Clithering. Also present: the beautiful and popular actress Jane Helier, and the elderly Dr Lloyd. And Miss Marple of course.

Who will solve the mystery of the Four Suspects? This time it is Sir Henry Clithering’s turn to bring the mystery…
